Two numbers frequently appear together in billiard cloth evaluation, and the assumption that they measure the same thing is a structural error. One is a categorical visual grade on a five-point scale. The other is a cumulative count of mechanical wear cycles. They emerge from different test procedures, travel in different mathematical formats, and cannot be converted into each other no matter how tempting the comparison seems.

The clearest entry point into this distinction is the Random Tumble Pilling Tester method, which rates cloth surface condition on a visual scale running from Grade 5, no pilling, to Grade 1, severe pilling [1]. The apparatus tumbles specimens inside a cylinder using compressed air, and the resulting surface change is then compared against visual reference standards, actual fabrics or photographs, before a grade is assigned [1]. That grade is categorical, not continuous: it places the specimen inside a defined class, the way a letter grade places a student inside a performance band, and the distance between a Grade 4 and a Grade 3 is not a quantity that can be multiplied, averaged, or mapped onto a scale measured in mechanical repetitions. A pilling result that falls outside the expected range for a comparable cloth is a reasonable diagnostic signal to inspect upstream fiber quality and finishing chemistry directly, since the standard's categorical rating cannot isolate which variable produced it.

Abrasion resistance, measured under a separate test method using an oscillatory cylinder apparatus, produces a fundamentally different output: a count of double rubs accumulated before the specimen reaches a specified failure condition. That count is continuous and accumulates linearly, so arithmetic operations on it are meaningful in ways that arithmetic on a pilling grade is not. Converting a Grade 3 pilling result into an equivalent double-rub count is not an approximation; it is a category error.

The Martindale apparatus sharpens this point further: two separate standards share this platform, one evaluating pilling and the other measuring abrasion resistance. Sharing a mechanical table does not collapse the distinction between what each protocol measures; pilling and wear-to-failure remain separate physical behaviors that the apparatus family cannot override.

Among the frameworks reviewed in this analysis, the pilling and abrasion test methods discussed above were not written with billiard applications in their stated scope; the inference connecting laboratory textile behavior to cloth performance over a billiard table is editorial, not a finding any of these methods make.
