A diver-style watch carries its water resistance rating like a credential, fixed and authoritative, engraved into metal that will outlast the polymers keeping water out. That permanence is worth sitting with. The number on the caseback describes the watch as it existed during a pressure test conducted years or decades prior, under controlled conditions, with seals that were new. It can't describe the seals as they exist now, and that gap between a fixed number and a changing part is where the practical uncertainty lives.

A Seal That May Not Age the Way the Rating Assumes
Elastomeric gaskets are generally understood to hold their seal through elastic memory, staying compressed enough between the case and caseback to keep exerting outward pressure. It's plausible that this tendency softens gradually over years of ordinary wear, through the kind of slow compression change elastomers are known to experience broadly, though this analysis can't confirm a rate or timeline for any specific watch without direct inspection. Ordinary temperature swings between warm outdoor air and a cooled interior may also play some role, since metal and elastomer don't necessarily respond to heat at identical rates, though isolating how much this actually contributes to any individual seal's condition isn't something this analysis can settle either.

Everyday exposure, skin contact, moisture, routine handling of the crown, may factor in as well, in the same general way that most elastomer seals are understood to respond to years of use rather than to any one dramatic event. What's fair to say is that a rating fixed at manufacture and a seal's actual condition years later aren't guaranteed to be describing the same thing.

Not every visible sign means the same thing, either. A faint haze under the crystal that clears within a minute or two of temperature equalizing is a different situation than a haze that lingers, since the first is consistent with an ordinary condensation response and the second suggests the internal environment took on more moisture than it's shedding back out. Watches that see genuine depth exposure are sometimes pressure-tested on a periodic basis as a matter of established industry practice, distinct from testing prompted by any particular sign — a distinction worth knowing exists, even though this analysis isn't the place to weigh which situation any individual watch is in.
